To split

I need to remember to split some perennials this fall/spring, specifically these guys- artichoke, daisies, and lilies.

Today’s haul

It’s gloomy today, but we had a few warm days, so things are reacting.

Pea haul is light today.

Strawberries are crazy! (Almost 2 pints today.)

Corn salad and spinach are bolting. Boo

Little squash still, but delicata are running.

Tomatillo’s have pretty little lantern packets, first green fruit on tomatoes.

Green blueberries.

About a quarter of the onions were bolting, so i pulled them to dry. (In picture)

Also grabbed some rhubarb and garlic scapes (along with the onion scapes).

And the first little artichokes (I love this variety, the heads are small, but there’s more meat on them and they don’t get buggy.)

Things

I have been doing, and harvesting some things in the garden, but haven’t been good about documenting, partially because there weather is horrid, and partially because the world is worse.

We’re right smack dab in the middle of junuary (it’s 55 right now, and pouring) and there have been protests and police action for over a week, in addition to everything still being locked down for the pandemic.

So, it’s hard to get excited about some snap peas and garlic scapes.

Salads

Besides asparagus, the main thing we’ve been getting out of the garden is salad greens.

The corn salad and spinach are doing great, kale and chard are coming in, and I’ve been thinning out the onions and beet greens.

Yesterday i found a couple of tiny peas!

Made me so happy.

The difference between blackberries

I did some blackberry pulling up top today, and figured out how to identify the different types (so I can leave the trailing native)

The native type has 3 leaves on each stem. The top leaf has two sticky outy (scientific language) lobes at the base.

Evergreen has 3 leaves as well, but the base leaves have the pokey lobes, and the top leaf is rounded. It also look more ruffly all around, the stem is reddish, and it has denser thorns on the stem.

Himalayan has 5 leaves. Easy peasy
