Beans, kale

It’s been coolish, but Soil temps are over 60, and we have some warm weather coming up. Planted green beans, wax beans, and some marigolds in west e. I put seeds I saved from last year on the corner nearest the neighbors house to see if they grow as well as the purchased ones.

Planted runner beans and Romano beans and nasturtium in south d- where the broad bean favas failed to over winter. I guess I’ll try them again next year? The “cover crop” favas look great, so maybe I’ll have some small beans again. All new beans went under robin baskets.

Added a few more peas to the pea bed, and put kale seeds around the outside.

Transplanted the last couple of late planted peppers, and up potted two tomato sprouts and moved them to the greenhouse, where everything is looking good on a seed mat on the ground.

Also harvested some mojito!

Apple Cake

We got inspired by the bake off and memories of my grandma’s apple cake. I found an old recipe that was very good, but not quite what I remembered. I made some adjustments and plan to use even more apple on top next time.

Salsa in October

Such a weird year. We still have tomatoes slowly ripening the n the garden. We haven’t had measurable rain in forever, and today, MIDOCTOBER, it’s 80 degrees out.

Anyways, we’re making more salsa. This was a 60% batch and p is adding about a quarter of a habanero pepper in the batch.

6 cups of tomatoes (.6 batch) filled almost 6 jars

Jelly

Grape Jelly Day. We barely made a dent in the grape supply to get a full pot, so we’ll probably have at least another batch in the next few days.

*EDIT- I went out and harvested more than another full batch.

Still waiting for us AFTER the two baskets.

We used the usual ball recipe but a low sugar pectin

Salsa!

Turned all those tomatoes into salsa today

Following the recipe we definitely needed more jars- I also cooked down the skins and trimmed bits and strained them for paste.

New recipes

This week I made up a couple of new recipes to use up some CSA veggies.

Patty pan soup

The first I got no photos of- but it’s delicious. I roasted patty pan squash (4 parts) carrots (1 pt) potatoes (2 pt) with some onion, then stewed them with a broth, basil, garlic, paprika and chili flakes. Then I used the immersion blender. Great thick soup hot or cold.y

“Lemony” Kale Pesto pasta

The second recipe is also VERY good. I sautéed some garlic and chili flakes on olive oil then let kale and sorrel wilt in there. Then I put that, fresh basil, parmigiana, and frozen garlic in the food processor. It tastes really yummy and I’m going to put it on pasta. —- needs lots of olive oil for pasta

Little harvest

Still thinning out the carrots and watering the seeds I planted (arugula was the first to come up, some dill sprouts and beets sprouts visible today.) there are several thornless blackberries under there.

Weather was cooler the last couple of days, so the tomatoes are still ripening slowly.

Salad is ripening, holy basil is growing,
