Beans, kale
It’s been coolish, but Soil temps are over 60, and we have some warm weather coming up. Planted green beans, wax beans, and some marigolds in west e. I put seeds I saved from last year on the corner nearest the neighbors house to see if they grow as well as the purchased ones.
Planted runner beans and Romano beans and nasturtium in south d- where the broad bean favas failed to over winter. I guess I’ll try them again next year? The “cover crop” favas look great, so maybe I’ll have some small beans again. All new beans went under robin baskets.
Added a few more peas to the pea bed, and put kale seeds around the outside.
Transplanted the last couple of late planted peppers, and up potted two tomato sprouts and moved them to the greenhouse, where everything is looking good on a seed mat on the ground.
Root veggies
Today I planted beets and carrots!
Also p dug up the raspberry bed. I think we’ll probably put more asparagus in there.
Harvests
I haven’t posted for every harvest, but here’s what I’ve been picking every 2 or three days.
I’ve been cooking yum stuff
And tonight we pickled beans and csa cucumbers (for fridge)
New recipes
This week I made up a couple of new recipes to use up some CSA veggies.
Patty pan soup
The first I got no photos of- but it’s delicious. I roasted patty pan squash (4 parts) carrots (1 pt) potatoes (2 pt) with some onion, then stewed them with a broth, basil, garlic, paprika and chili flakes. Then I used the immersion blender. Great thick soup hot or cold.y
“Lemony” Kale Pesto pasta
The second recipe is also VERY good. I sautéed some garlic and chili flakes on olive oil then let kale and sorrel wilt in there. Then I put that, fresh basil, parmigiana, and frozen garlic in the food processor. It tastes really yummy and I’m going to put it on pasta. —- needs lots of olive oil for pasta
Wander, fertilize, and plant
Got some squash, Romano beans, remaining peas, thinned carrots, asparagus, rhubarb, berries, and a few more sungolds. I planted more beets and carrots in the bed with the old favas. I also planted some more peas on the back side of the pea bed, and the remaining sweet Loraines as a ground cover in the onion bed (I ordered another variety of fava for next year.) I also replanted herbs in pots, fertilized. thanks and put mesclun mix in the empty spinach and corn salad pots. i cut back the lavender and artichokes that were blocking the rock steps. I’m tired.
I’ll prolly start having other tomatoes (plum and Roma) in the next week. Yay!
Finally cooler
It’s been too hot lately- we had a week over 90- and I’ve been hiding out from the sun. Some plants are very happy though.
I cut the favas and pulled the beans. I think I want to try a different variety and next year, though.
I also pulled the rest of the garlic to cure.
It was the first good sized harvest- with Romano beans, patty pan, zucchini, yellow squash, plump blueberries, thornless blackberries, and thinned out carrots. And some nice sized artichokes.
The flowers are pretty too
Also- I planted the last straggler pepper into a bag, and moved one of the lavender stems I’m trying to propagate into a little pot.
Ok harvest today
Got a couple of strawberries, a bunch of rhubarb, started pulling the onions for curing, more garlic scapes, thinned some carrots, 2 more sungold tomatoes, a bunch of snap peas…
The runner beans are starting to flower- the green beans are still going slow and look a little sun bleached. The favas have some burst pods and need more attention- may rethink for next year. also, there are a couple tomatillo pods forming.
Roots and greens
Planted spinach, New Zealand spinach, arugula, and cilantro in bags and pots on the spa pad. Planted carrots and beets in south c. Planted carrots and kale in south b with the favas, and planted kale with the finally emerging peas.
And here’s an update on the sprouts
Garden Update
Beans are gone, I’ll pull them out soon. Fava are coming up and there are a few pea flowers ? little harvest of winter squash and carrots and tomatillos today. Planted garlic.
