Spent the afternoon cleaning up leaves and dead plants. P is working on the fence because we have a big planting project coming up in the upper yard.
He pulled the apple tree a little while back, because we realized we would never win the fight against pests.
The arugula and roots are going strong, the kale is hanging in there, and the asparagus still has green (I’m supposed to cut it back when it turns brown.)
I had another big haul today (mostly squash) and pulled some onions. First Roma tomatoes are starting to get color.
Pulled the rest of the radish and turnip plants from upper c and reseeded with beets and carrots.
Planted some peas in west C, and some arygula in upper c. P got most of the other beds ready for 60 degree soil.
Roots and greens are sprouting well.
We have a few asparagus spikes poking through the soil- not as many as I’d hope, but a couple are quite thick.
The hops are already going crazy, p pulled the extra bits off today.
Raspberries are starting to bloom.
It’s been quite dry and warm here the last few weeks- so I watered today and a couple of days ago.
Starts are starting- okra and tomato plants are going first (:
Planted kale and Swiss chard in West C, after tilling in the cover crop and adding compost. I just sort of sprinkled the seeds around.
Planted root crops together in upper c. It might be a mess, but I plan to thin things down as I go. Carrots, rutabaga, beets, and radishes. Covered the first set with some loose soil (1/2 deep) and just sort of sprinkled the rest in.

I actually think that tearing out the old plants is almost as satisfying as planting int the spring. I still have a couple of things going- kale, chard, Brussels sprouts, carrots, beets, leeks- but I’m ready to retire my gloves for the winter and focus on other projects.
That’s not too say it was easy. My hands hurt after a Saturday of cleaning and pulling.
But I did have some beautiful carrots, and a HUGE beet as my reward.

Pulled okra plants, but left the peas carrots and beets in west e.
Pulled the peas support from lower bed.
Geeze. Surely I did more than that.
3 days since last harvest. A feast!
Also, first bun alert in two years… In the Brussels sprout bed…. Please leave some for me!
We are without electricity today, and I decided not to go downtown because of the SNOW and instead opted for working in the yard a bit… I’m almost able to feel my toes now. /:
Planted chard, kale, and romaine in upper b. (romaine is furthest west)
Put leeks, beets, and carrots in south a.
I really fluffed up the soil there (and found a patch of mycelium), with the hope of better root crops. Let’s hope bunnies don’t like carrots IRL.
Peas are JUST starting to break the surface, and some ejected themselves from the soil (:. Saw a tiny bit of green in West E- beets and radishes.
The onions are looking a tad bit better (the old greenery died off, but new stuff is pushing out). I just need to remember that this is how they roll.
