Jelly

Grape Jelly Day. We barely made a dent in the grape supply to get a full pot, so we’ll probably have at least another batch in the next few days.

*EDIT- I went out and harvested more than another full batch.

Still waiting for us AFTER the two baskets.

We used the usual ball recipe but a low sugar pectin

Grapes

I cut back the grapes today, while we were harvesting, but it’s probably too early, and I definitely went too crazy with it.

Found a good reference for pruning next year

https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/catalog/files/project/pdf/ec1639.pd

Basically, each year you choose one fruiting cane to use as the new feeder for the next year. Looks like pruning should be done in the C winter when the leaves are gone, and finished up in the spring.

Still giving

Good haul today- tomatoes are still looking ok- we might have some cool weather coming up, so I’ll keep an eye on them. (I’m pulling the tomatoes early to ripen inside, anything orange).

The jalapeños never got very big, but they look plump and healthy. I’ll need to remember to pull them before a cold snap.

Look at this enormous marigold! It’s from whatever seeds I sprinkled last year at the base of the rocks.

Squash are getting powdery mildew. Happens every year. Delicata look established, which is good. Prolly have another week or so of summer squash.

The okra is still going!

Peas, kale, and favas are getting started.

Looks like it’s almost grape time- we’re going to make jelly this year.

Eating

I haven’t done a good job writing about harvests, so I thought I’d do an update.

We have a TON of kale in west c. I’ve been thinning it and eating the babies, now we are up to mostly full grown plants. This is my best kale result ever. Is it the bed? Overseeding?

Radishes grew well, and we are bunches until my lips started to swell and crack. No radishes for Alison next year ): I’m scared to try the turnips.

We’ve eaten a few young red onions, and 4 garlic scapes!

We’ve had a bunch of arugula. It’s bolting now, but still tastes ok.

There’s lettuce in my plastic bowl for lettucing

Berries are on their way. Blueberries are forming, as are raspberries, and strawberries. There are blackberries and salal in flower stages, and even a few grapes.
