Fertilizing, weeding, progress, uppotting

It’s been warm for a few days, but we’re in for a stretch in the 40-50s. I weeded and fertilized the strawberry patch, fertilized the potted herbs, harvested more rhubarb for soda, mint for drying. The older plum tree is finally blooming, so hopefully we’ll get some pollinators. the peas are finally large enough to uncover, and the beets and carrots are sprouting. Garlic and onions are doing well. Potatoes (from grocery store) are sprouting and I’ve covered them a couple of times.

I up- potted a few of the larger starts and put them on the floor of the greenhouse, and moved the (late) sprouted peppers into 3” pots. I’m still unhappy with my starts, but I think some will pull through. (Btw- I felt the same way last year and it wasn’t as cold!) I definitely think starting with the little pods and transplanting is the best way to go.

The squash in the walls look good, the ones outside not so much- which I expected. I also fertilized the asparagus and cut a few pieces.

Planting

Feeling better today- so I decided to embrace the sun and get some stuff in the ground!

Also notable- although I feel like we’ve had some rain, the soil was DRY dry, and I had to hand water everything. It’s about time to set up the drip line I guess.

2 Nova sauce and one red Robin cherry tomato start (my starts) went into west C and west d. They went into cages… Which always feel a little optimistic in size this time of year. (;

Two peppers went into upper B… Which was supposed to be full of kale, chard, and romaine…. HA! Next year I won’t even bother direct seeding those.

I put out one little okra to test soil conditions in West D. If it’s still alive in a couple of days I’ll move the rest out. Okra would probably be a good use for water walls in the future.

I moved a couple of the squash starts out to the greenhouse, and planted a bit more romaine and kale in there.

I also added red fertilizer to the tomatoes in the ground, and blue to the blueberries and camelia.

Sun-day

Did a couple of chores around the yard today.

Chopped up the cover crop in upper b and upper c, and added amendment. I’m ready to get some greens in the ground! I’m hoping the cover crops and such will help with my nutrient deficiencies in there last year.

On Monday I started a bunch of tomato and pepper seedlings in side. I already have a bunch of tomatoes starting!

We set up the greenhouse/shelf outside, and discussed how we’ll use it. I’d like to do some starts out there when it gets a little warmer (okra?) and I’ll likely use it when my tomatoes and peppers are bigger.

More things are starting to come up- the perrenial sunflower has some activity at the root causing us to wonder about sunchokes… The garlic is going good- and the onions look terrible, but I think they always look terrible for a little bit.

Less related to the garden, I evened out the rocks and dirt in the spa-pit and moved the fire pit there (after replacing the rusted bowl.) Vegan s’mores will be had this summer.
